If you are having Botox for the first time, you may have many questions to ask your aesthetics practitioner about your aesthetics treatment. In your initial consultation, you will have the opportunity to talk about your aesthetic concerns and injectable treatment, as well as highlight any medical conditions you may have and your medical history. However, here are some general questions we can answer for you.
Botox, or botulinum toxin type A, is a neurotoxic protein commonly used in aesthetic medicine to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It works by temporarily paralysing the muscles and nerve signals that cause these facial lines, resulting in a smoother appearance of the skin and a more youthful appearance. Botox was initially developed for medical purposes, such as treating muscle spasms and excess sweating. Botox has gained huge popularity within the aesthetic industry over the last few decades for reducing the appearance of lines and creating smoother skin. Particularly popular for reducing the appearance of crow lines and forehead lines, anti-wrinkle injections help prevent muscle contractions that cause wrinkles.
Botox treatments are a hugely popular medical treatment involving a series of small injections into specific muscles in the face. The procedure is usually quick, has minimal discomfort and can often be completed in under 30 minutes, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles. The practitioner will assess your facial anatomy and carefully administer the injections based on your individual goals and desired outcomes.
Unlike dermal fillers, where results are immediate, results from Botox typically become noticeable within a few days post-treatment. Most people see the best effects of the treatment about 7 to 14 days after the injections. The results can last anywhere from three to six months, depending on various factors such as the area treated, the dosage used, the individual’s muscle activity, lifestyle and genetics.
Botox is widely regarded as a safe and effective treatment when undertaken by a medical professional. However, as with any medical procedure, it does carry some potential side effects. The most common side effects are listed here:
In rarer cases;
Overall, serious side effects are extremely rare when a qualified and experienced practitioner administers Botox. However, talking about any concerns you may have with your aesthetics practitioner beforehand is essential.
A common concern for those considering Botox is whether the effects can be reversed. Once administered, there is no direct way to “undo” Botox since it works by inhibiting muscle activity, but the effects naturally wear off over time as the body metabolises. However, you can try However, you can try increasing your metabolism or stimulating nerves with something like an electric toothbrush. However, please note, this is not proven.
How often you get Botox will depend on how expressive your face is and your metabolism. Botox injections last 3 – 4 months in most clients and, in a few, 6 months or more. Anti-wrinkle injections gradually wear off, with the return to full movement in the face. We would not recommend having Botox any more than every three months due to the risk of botulinum toxin resistance.
The best age to start Botox is when you become concerned by dynamic wrinkles. Forehead wrinkles and eye wrinkles can deepen over time. Botox can soften their appearance and give the face a youthful blush. As an ethical practitioner, I wouldn’t inject someone in their twenties, but from the age of thirty, Botox can prove effective in reducing forehead wrinkles and facial wrinkles around the eye area by targeting the facial muscles.
Botox can be combined with other aesthetic treatments, including hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, PRP therapy and skin boosters. However, you should always discuss these aesthetic procedures with your practitioner to create a treatment plan. Speak to your practitioner to determine if other invasive treatments are appropriate and check if you have allowed ample time for your Botox to settle before undergoing further medical aesthetics. While Botox is an effective treatment for wrinkles, dermal filler and laser treatments can help reduce the appearance of deeper wrinkles for a 360 approach to anti-ageing treatments.
The three main areas for anti-wrinkle treatment are the forehead to tackle frown lines, around the eyes (commonly known as crow’s feet), and between the eyebrows (known as the glabellar region). Dynamic wrinkles often form in these areas due to repeated facial expressions. However, we may target other areas as treatment options for some clients. For example, botulinum toxin injections in the ‘smokers lines’ above the lip can help reduce their appearance.
Injecting into the border of the lip as a botulinum toxin treatment can improve other facial features, such as creating a lip flip to enhance volume as an alternative treatment to dermal fillers and improve a ‘gummy smile’. We can also inject into the masseter muscles in the jawline to create a more snatched jawline appearance. Botox not only helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles but can significantly enhance the overall look of your face.
Every client’s anti-wrinkle injection treatment is different, and we will talk about this during the consultation to ensure you’re satisfied with your cosmetic procedure.
Choosing a qualified practitioner is crucial to your safety and for achieving great results, especially if you are considering having a Botox treatment or other injectable treatment. Here are a few of the qualifications and aspects you should consider:
Your Botox injector should have a solid medical background. Look for practitioners who are licensed professionals, such as pharmacists, dermatologists or qualified nurses with additional training in aesthetic procedures. Choosing a medical professional with a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology is essential for effective and safe injecting.
Always enquire about the practitioner’s experience with Botox. Experienced injectors tend to understand facial dynamics better and the nuances of Botox application. Don’t hesitate to ask for before-and-after photos of previous clients to gauge their proficiency and artistic eye. As a leading aesthetics trainer, I teach my students to consider the impact on the patient’s facial harmony, but not every injector will.
